Swan, Shakespeare’s Globe to launch Mead Mondays with Gosnells by Tom Kembery

Words: Tom Kembery

This September, Swan, Shakespeare’s Globe will partner with Gosnells London Mead to launch Mead Mondays - a series of fun and interactive talks on the increasingly popular honey based drink, to be held on every second Monday of the month, until November.

Favoured by Shakespeare and referenced in his works Love’s Labour’s Lost and The Merry Wives of Windsor, mead is the focus of each event, and the star ingredient in a bar menu and cocktail list specially created for the series.

Hosted by Tom Gosnell, founder of London’s first and only mead brewery, Mead Mondays will commence at 7.30pm with a 30 minute talk, followed by Q&A time.  With each event covering a brief history of mead, the interactive monthly topics will include:

Mead and Food Pairing (12th September) – a session on the best dishes to pair with mead, followed by a tasting.
Mead Cocktail Masterclass (10th October) – a class on how to use mead in cocktails with a few guests invited to make their own.
Mead and Honey (14th November) – a masterclass and tasting on the different types of honey that can be used in making mead.

During and after the talks, guests can enjoy the mead-inspired bar menu with dishes including; Spiced Mead Chicken Wings, Mustard and Mead Glazed Pork Belly Chunks, Spiced Cauliflower with Spiced Mead Dip, and Mead Bread Crisps with Young Sheep Cheese and Thyme Honey.

Head mixologist Charles Gaboreau has collaborated with the team at Gosnells to create a concise list of cocktails all featuring Gosnells Original Mead.  These include Honey and Spice – with sugar, lime, rum and mead; Peckham Lemonade – with lemon juice, honey syrup, gin and mead; Tequila Meadow Bird - blackberry pureé, reposado tequila and mead; and Pear Mule – with pear puree, lemon, vodka and mead.
The bar menu and cocktail list will also be available during Mead Monday sessions, and daily throughout the autumn.

The Mead Monday events will be held in the Snug, which is tucked away at one end of the bar, and complete with sofas and armchairs as well as more traditional tables and banquet seating with sliding glass and copper screens separating Mead Monday guests from the bar.
Guests are encouraged to book their complimentary place in advance, with walk-ins also accepted subject to availability.
