The Lost Angel and Gaslight Grill By Tom Kembery

Words: Tom Kembery

Lacking the ease of a tube station, Battersea is not an area that we would normally feel inclined to make the burdensome train journey to. It’s far from your average London district, being rather dull and residential with a deficiency in the glamour and vigour expected of the city. So when the Studio Club team were invited to check out The Lost Society’s newest addition, we were sceptical to say the least.

Located a short walk away from Battersea Park rail station, the Lost Angel looks like nothing more than a typical local British pub. But open its doors and step into the magical sylvan wonderland, effortlessly decorated with majestic Victorian-inspired furnishings. The bar is spacious and inviting, with a luxurious leather lounging area. Complete with woodland scene walls, trumpet light fittings, an old-fashioned telephone box and a large portrait of the Queen, the Lost Angel is enchantingly quirky. It is chic without being pretentious, creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

After undergoing an extensive refurbishment in 2012, the Lost Angel spread its wings and the Gaslight Grill was born, redefining the dining and drinking experience. Located inside the Lost Angel, the Gaslight Grill is a unique steakhouse with a creative flare, offering the best of British seasonal produce complemented by an interesting selection of homemade sauces.

We started our evening by getting acquainted with the impressive cocktail menu. We were spoilt for choice and opted for two light refreshing aperitifs to cleanse the palate; the Cucumber Gimlet and the Englishman Refresher. Being a Gin Palace, the cocktails did gin proud and enhanced the spirit within each unique blend. But gin is not the only drink on the menu, as the bar also offers a wide selection of other spirits, beers, ciders and wines.
The food menu is small but perfectly crafted. For starters, we tucked into baked crab and Patty-pan squash and Dorset blue parcels, both thoughtfully presented and delicious. Moving on to the main course, we opted for the 300g fillet steak and char-grilled venison. Both were tender and cooked to perfection, with roasted seasonal vegetables and hand cut chips. Very intrigued by the extensive list of sauces, we dipped into walnut and black truffle jus, sloe gin sauce, Béarnaise and Smoky Bowmore whisky sauce (recommended by the waiter and our favourite!) For dessert, we delved into a mouth-watering sticky toffee pudding (The best we have ever had in our life's!!!!) and finished off with an espresso cocktail.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening and were made extremely welcome. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about offering a unique dining experience. The Lost Angel and Gaslight Grill is a hidden gem, making the journey into Battersea completely worth it. Every element has been meticulously thought-out; the décor, the food, the drinks, the service, with nothing falling anywhere below perfection. Our evening exceeded all expectations and proves that you should never judge a book by its cover (or its location).
